The Quality Behind the Walls of Your Custom Home

Some of the most important parts of a custom home are the things you’ll never see.

You’ll notice the kitchen cabinets. You’ll notice the lighting, flooring, countertops, and beautiful finishes. But behind all of those details is the construction and craftsmanship that make a home comfortable, durable, and built to last.

At Holliday Homes, we believe what happens behind the walls matters just as much as what happens in front of them.

The Exterior Walls: More Than Just Framing
One of the products we use in our homes is ZIP System sheathing. Unlike traditional wall sheathing, ZIP System combines structural sheathing with an integrated water-resistive barrier, helping create a more continuous layer of protection around the home.

That matters because moisture management is one of the most important parts of building a home that performs well over time.

The seams and penetrations are also important. We use ZIP System flashing tape and compatible accessories to help create a continuous weather-resistant barrier around areas where water could potentially find its way into the wall assembly.

Once the siding and interior drywall are installed, you won't see any of this. But at Holliday Homes, we know it's doing its job every day, and a high-quality build starts with in the very first stages of construction.

Waterproofing a Shower Is More Than Installing Tile
A beautiful tile shower starts long before the first tile is set.

The shower walls and floor need to be properly prepared, with a waterproofing system installed at the substrate and all of the critical transitions addressed. Corners, seams, joints, niches, benches, and plumbing penetrations all need to be properly waterproofed and sealed. The shower floor also needs the appropriate slope so water moves toward the drain rather than sitting where it shouldn't.

Only after those steps are completed does the tile become part of the finished surface.

This is a great example of why what's underneath the finished product matters. The tile is what you see, but the waterproofing system underneath is what helps protect the structure behind it.

Insulation and Energy Efficiency
Once the drywall goes up, you won't see the insulation inside your walls or ceilings. But you'll certainly notice the results.

Proper insulation helps regulate temperatures throughout the home and contributes to overall energy efficiency and comfort.

The details matter here, too. Gaps, penetrations, and areas where different building components meet all need to be addressed properly. It's not simply about putting insulation in the walls; it's about creating a well-considered building envelope.

The Systems Behind the Comfort
Your HVAC system is another part of the home that you don't necessarily think about once you move in—unless something isn't working properly.

During construction, there are a lot of decisions involved in planning HVAC systems, including equipment sizing, ductwork, registers, returns, and where everything is located.

The same is true for plumbing and electrical.

By the time you move in, most of these systems are hidden behind walls and ceilings. But they are what allow your home to heat and cool properly, provide water where you need it, and power everything from your kitchen appliances to the lights in your home gym.

The Details That Don't Make the Photos
When a custom home is finished, it's natural to focus on the things that photograph beautifully: the kitchen island, the fireplace, the primary bathroom, or the statement lighting. We love those details, too.

But after building custom homes in Davidson, NC, we've learned that some of the most important work happens long before the finishes are installed.

It's in the flashing around a window. The waterproofing behind a shower. The way the building envelope is assembled. The placement of mechanical systems. The attention paid to every transition and connection.

Those details may never make it into the final photography, but they're part of what makes a Holliday Homes house a well-built home.

Because beautiful is what you see. Quality is often what you don't.
